Tree Renewal Program
The New Cemetery of Somerville was established in 1867. It was designed as an example of a Victorian garden cemetery with rustic roadways winding among a random profusion of grave markers and majestic trees keeping watch over the departed.
Maintaining any park like vista always presents challenges as trees succumb to age and storms. In the past, lost trees were generally not replaced. As a result, this beautiful garden cemetery was slowly becoming devoid of trees.
During 2013 and 2014, the Board of Trustees undertook a campaign to replace more than 75 of the lost trees. Going forward, in order to maintain a tranquil Victorian experience with a beautiful atmosphere of peaceful repose, we are seeking donations for our TREE RENEWAL PROGRAM to insure that trees are replaced as they fall. Progressive renewal will help us avoid future crisis situations.
You can help us by making a general donation to the Cemetery's Tree Renewal Program. Since the Cemetery is a 501(c)13 non-profit organization, your donation may be a tax deductible contribution. The donations will be placed in a restricted account to be used to purchase the trees pictured on this page at an appropriate time.
There are opportunities to arrange for a purchase of one of the pictured trees, with an engraved paver in memory or honor of a loved one, at the Cemetery's cost. These purchases can be discussed with the President of the Cemetery's Board of Trustees.
